Bilfinger Berger Project Investments (BBPI) and co-investor Siemens have been selected by the state of Schleswig-Holstein to design, finance, build and operate a new particle therapy centre in Kiel.
The contract is the largest public private partnership project in the German health-care sector to date.
BBPI is contributing its extensive experience in financing, construction and project management, whilst Siemens assumes responsibility for the technical operation of the particle therapy system.
Particle therapy is a newly developed cancer treatment. It involves exposing the tumour to charged particle beam energy which can be targeted more precisely than with conventional methods, it also has significantly fewer side effects.
Once operation commences, approximately 3,000 patients a year from all over northern Germany and southern Scandinavia will be treated. In addition to particle therapy, the new centre will have facilities for conventional cancer treatment and in-patient accommodation.
